SANCTUARY FOR KIDS: Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler and Jill Bodie recently launched their not for profit foundation, Sanctuary for Kids. The goal of S4K is to provide sanctuary for children living in less than ideal, and sometimes even horrific, circumstances around the world through online donations and auctions. Funds raised by S4K are distributed to worthy charity projects around the world and in North America which will make a difference in the lives of children. On the “History” portion of the website, a note from Amanda can be found:

“We all feel very lucky and honoured to be able to
do jobs we love with people we love. Jill, Damian
and I all felt a very strong desire and responsibility
to do something with the reach and audience we
have through the show Sanctuary and the sci-fi
community. We didn’t want to waste the influence
that the series has, or the meaningful connections
we personally have made with so many people
around the world.

In this industry, it can be easy to get caught up in
the work and not look outside the studio. But we
really wanted to start something different.
Something grassroots and personal. An initiative
based on relationships and community. And we ask
you to join us in making that difference. We ask you
to help us create Sanctuary for Kids.”

Sanctuary for Kids will run three sets of online auctions every year and has already raised approx. $12,695 US through the first set of auctions. Sometimes it’s hard to tell how much people who run a charity actually care about the work they are doing; this is not the case with S4K. One of the items set to be auctioned as a prop from Sanctuary and, after bids had already been made, the item had to be pulled. Rather than simply apologizing for the inconvenience, this message was posted on the “Auction” section of the website:

Due to an unfortunate circumstance, we have had
to pull the “sonic stunner” prop from our current
auction.

We want to thank everyone for their amazing
support and apologize for any inconvenience this
may cause.

In lieu of this prop item in the auction, Amanda will
be donating $1000 to Sanctuary for Kids to ensure
that the charities receive the funds we anticipated.

SANCTUARY FOR ALL: OPERATION NORTH POLE: Many of us enjoy sending Christmas cards to our friends during the holiday season as a way to show them that we care about them and value their friendship. Well, why not do the same for an actress who has put a smile (and sometimes a few tears) on our faces countless times. That’s the idea behind “Sanctuary For All: Operation North Pole.”

To participate in this project, all you have to do is make or buy a Christmas card for Amanda and send it in along with a donation of at least $5 CAN which can either be made online or sent in the form of a money order made out to Sanctuary for Kids.
